In the past few years, scientists have been working harder and harder to find out more about Alzheimer’s disease and how it works so they can work to find a cure for the disease. They have been trying to find risk factors and causes and how they affect the body to lead to Alzheimer’s disease. One cause of Alzheimer’s disease that has been found is genetics. Recent studies have found substantial links between the genetics of a person and their likelihood to develop Alzheimer’s disease.
Recent studies have found that in many cases where family members have Alzheimer’s disease, the cause of Alzheimer’s disease actually has to do with a genetic problem that is carried on in the family. At times, there are certain mutations of genes that are dominant, especially on the 21st chromosome, that can cause the increased risk and even early onset of Alzheimer’s disease. Other chromosomes that are linked to this disease include the 1st, 10th and 14th chromosomes. Usually, in families, these types of genetic problems become dominant and are carried on through the family.
Other studies that have been done recently have found that people that have the ApoE4 gene are more likely to develop this disease. While scientists have not actually confirmed that these genetic problems are the cause of Alzheimer’s disease, they do seem to have some correlation to the disease and how it works. There have been cases where people had the gene but never actually developed the disease, which caused many questions about the genetic links of Alzheimer’s disease. The more scientists study the genes and how they correspond to Alzheimer’s disease, the closer they will come to finding an actual cause of Alzheimer’s disease. Once they find a cause, they can start finding a cure for the disease.
