What is the Cause of Alzheimer’s?

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 8:00 pm

What is the cause of Alzheimer’s disease? This is a question that doctors, patients and family members have been asking for years. Studies have not found any actual causes as to why some people develop Alzheimer’s disease. However, there are a variety of risk factors that seem to increase the risk of developing the disease. Since the cause of Alzheimer’s has not actually been found, this makes it hard to find a cure when they are not sure of the cause. There are a variety of risks that you can be aware of that may clue you in to you chances of developing the disease.

Age, although it is not actually a cause of Alzheimer’s, is the greatest risk factor for getting this disease. Usually, those who develop this disease are over the age of 65. Once you are over the age of 65 your risk keeps going up and after you turn 85, your risk is actually 50% higher. Family history is another risk factor to keep in mind as well. Many times, those who have family members who have developed Alzheimer’s disease are more at risk for getting the disease themselves.

Some other risk factors that may increase the likelihood of getting Alzheimer’s include head injuries, heart problems and general bad health as you grow older. While you cannot change your age or your family, you can help change these risk factors. You can make sure that you do your best to keep your head from getting injured. Always wear a helmet when you are biking or skating. Heart problems have been linked to Alzheimer’s disease as well. Keeping your blood pressure down and keeping diabetes under control can help you out, as well. Also, keeping your body generally healthy can help you as you grow older.

While no direct cause of Alzheimer’s disease has been found, it is important to keep these risk factors in mind. Remember that, although you cannot change all of them, there are risk factors that you can change to help your brain stay healthy. Taking the time to decrease your risk factors can help you have a smaller chance of developing Alzheimer’s disease in the future.
