Alzheimer’s Medication: Stabilizing the Symptoms of Alzheimer’s

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 7:50 pm

While Alzheimer’s disease is affecting many people all over the world, unfortunately, scientists have yet to find a cure for this disease. Although a cure has not been found, there are a variety of medications that have been found helpful to patients suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. Since this is a disease that slowly breaks down the brain cells, nothing has been found to repair those cells. However, Alzheimer’s medication can be used to slow down the degeneration of brain cells and to help the patient’s condition stabilize. There are a variety of drugs that are being used to help stabilize the symptoms of the disease including Cholinesterase Inhibitors and Memantine.

Cholinesterase Inhibitors are one of the two classes of drugs that the Food and Drug Administration have approved for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. This type of drug is used to help keep the messengers to the brain healthy and working so that memory function can be at it’s best. Even though other brain cells may be dying, this drug can help keep memory stabilized. There are several different drugs in this class that are often prescribed including Aricept, Exelon and Razadyne. Usually, this type of Alzheimer’s medication works on about half of the people that take it and they usually experience mild improvement.

Memantine is another Alzheimer’s medication that has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration to treat Alzheimer’s disease. Usually, this drug is used for those who have moderate to severe cases of Alzheimer’s. This drug also works with the chemicals in the brain that are associated with memory and may keep a patient’s memory from going downhill so fast. While it is not a cure, this drug can help slow down the stages of Alzheimer’s disease.

Alzheimer’s medication can be an important part of treatment for Alzheimer’s patients. While these medications cannot totally cure the disease, they can help deal with the symptoms and help preserve some memory functions. It is important to remember that Alzheimer’s medication, like any other, should only be used as directed and as prescribed by a doctor.
